Draisienne or velocipede shown replacing horses in the French post service, 1818. The Draisienne was the forerunner of the bicycle and was invented by Baron von Drais in France in 1817. It was introduced to England the following year by Denis Johnson, a coachmaker of Long Acre, London, and was known in Britain as a ´dandy´ or ´hobby horse. Draisiennes had no pedals or brakes, but were propelled by the rider pushing on the ground with his feet, and dragging the feet to slow the machine.

´Fashionable Portraits´, a scene in Hyde Park, 1819. Two dandies approach a woman in fashionable dress. She walks in through an opening in the rails, looking alluringly over her shoulder at the man in the left.

Primitive bicycle, a form of ´dandy horse´, c1818. ´The dandy ´ or ´hobby horse´ was the forerunner of the bicycle and was invented by Baron von Drais in France in 1817. It was introduced to England the following year by Denis Johnson, a coachmaker of Long Acre, London, who described it as a ´pedestrian curricle´. Dandy horses had no pedals or brakes, but were propelled by the rider pushing on the ground with his feet, and dragging the feet to slow the machine. Johnson started a school where prospective purchasers could learn how to ride the machine, and in 1819 fashionable London society was briefly gripped by a craze for riding a hobby horse.

´Monstrosities of 1827´, 1827. Men and women parading their ridiculous fashions to each other. All of the women´s hats are huge, and over decorated with flowers, bows and feathers. Their puffed sleeves and billowing skirts are in direct contrast to their tightly corseted waists. The men too wear jackets that have been pinched in at the waist and have puffed sleeves. To the right a little boy´s outfit mirrors that of the men, topped off with a lucicrous hat.
